Ryan offers to watch a movie with me. Some kind of consolation prize I earned by putting up with him never being around.

I don't really want to, but he made the effort to bring dinner over. It seems cold to refuse.

I put on Sunset Boulevard, a Billy Wilder film about a screenwriter forced to work with a delusional has-been actress. Ryan pretends to pay attention for the first twenty minutes.

But he tires of the film and scoots closer on the couch. He presses his lips against my neck, slides his hand under my top.

It's been weeks since he's tried to touch me. He's usually too tired or too busy with work.

His hands feel like nothing. This used to be different. He was never an amazing lover, but he was competent enough, and I wanted him enough.

Hell, the last year or so, I've been desperate for any chance to feel close to him.

But tonight I can't stomach the thought. I shift to the other side of the couch. "I'm sorry. I can't."

He scowls for a moment, but shakes it off. "I'll get home early tomorrow."

I make a noncommittal noise at that news.

I know there's something horribly wrong when I'm cringing over him touching me. The same man who I agreed to marry such a short time ago. I add it to my growing list of concerns. A list that seems to be getting longer by the second.

Corine was right.

I can't keep allowing men to stand in the way of what I want. I am going back to acting, and I have no room for anything that might get in the way.

Ryan excuses himself when it's clear I won't change my mind. He's probably back to work on his laptop five minutes after I close the door behind him.

The bedroom is dark. It's quiet. It's calm. But there's something so suffocating about it, like it's a sick prison for my thoughts. There is too much swirling around my brain.

Luke had a girlfriend. She was important to him.

Or she still is.

It shouldn't matter. I am resolved to focus on my career. I am resolved not to let any more men get in my way.

But I just can't shake the need to know.

I creep to the other side of the room, where my phone is plugged into the wall, and I text him:

Can I see you tomorrow?

He replies quickly. I'll be in my apartment until 9:30. I'll leave a key under the mat.

My stomach is tied up in knots again, but this will be the last time.

I'm going to figure out what the hell I'm doing.

I'm going to find out exactly who this woman is and what she means to him.
